How We Reviewed

Curriculum and Media Variety: We looked for studios offering focused painting guidance or a wider mix of fine arts and digital skills. Having diverse subjects helps learners build practical portfolios or explore fresh personal hobbies.
Tutor Experience: We assessed the artistic background and qualifications of instructors running each classroom. Dedicated guidance from practicing artists ensures students gain realistic feedback and strong technical habits.
Course Flexibility and Scheduling: We examined class timetables to see how easily working adults and younger students can attend. Flexible options like short terms and evening slots make it much easier to stay committed.
Studio Facilities and Materials: We reviewed the physical workspaces and included supplies provided by each school. Having proper studio equipment lets students create freely without facing heavy unexpected expenses.

Hours: Tuesday 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM, 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM | Wednesday 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

At Mount Rivers House in Carrigaline, learning classic painting techniques feels far more rewarding with authentic European studio training at the easel.

French-born painter and interior designer Dorothee Roberts shares her Paris training through intimate studio classes.

A visit to a Tuesday morning session reveals how her hands-on tips simplify complex colour harmony. Her students choose from five weekly slots or join small painting getaways abroad, benefiting directly from an active exhibiting artist.

Before committing, keep in mind that the timetable clusters strictly around Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The curriculum focuses almost entirely on painting rather than wider design pathways, limiting flexibility for students seeking broader subjects.

Pros

  • Affordable €20 to €25 two-hour sessions
  • Five weekly class times across mornings, afternoons, and evenings
  • Small-group overseas painting trips
  • Direct instruction from an active exhibiting artist

Cons

Beginner-friendly art classes

Dorothees Art classes are the best. Dorothee is a wonderful teacher and has time for a beginner like me. The studio setting is also very authentic and a lovely space to work in. Very welcoming. I highly recommend.

Small classes with individual attention

I am having such a good time at Dorothee’s art sessions every Wednesday morning… I look forward to going each week! The classes are small, so I feel that I have individual attention.. also there is no pressure to finish on time, which is great especially for beginners..whether it is acrylics or water colour painting, there is always something new to learn Ruth O’Sullivan, Cork.

Hours: Class Schedule

YAA Art offers a welcoming, low-pressure studio environment, making all the difference when young children or nervous adults want to explore painting.

It’s good to know that the owner, Anne Gabriel, studied the Principles of Art Therapy at Crawford College, prioritising relaxed, step-by-step guidance over strict technique.

The hands-on instruction helps students build canvas paintings with real pride during supportive term sessions.

Beyond that, the flexible scheduling allows learners to enrol in short six-week blocks or pay weekly to avoid long academic commitments.

Just be aware that course offerings focus exclusively on acrylic painting. Afternoon kids’ sessions occasionally pause during off-peak months, so double-checking the active timetable beforehand ensures your preferred class time is running smoothly.

Pros

  • Flexible six-week terms and pay-weekly pricing
  • Dedicated age groups from young children to adults
  • Annual student exhibition for teenagers
  • Year-round holiday camps and family workshops

Cork College creates a clear bridge between basic studio skills and university standards through established transfer links and Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) awards.

Their structured academic pathways allow creative learners to progress seamlessly into full honours degree programmes.

Students gain hands-on access to dedicated studio spaces and industry-standard digital design software covering diverse disciplines from ceramics to illustration. With them, developing strong practical skills becomes straightforward and engaging.

We appreciate that their budget-friendly options lower financial barriers. In fact, several full-time courses cost just €100 and require only five sample artworks at interview rather than a daunting, full portfolio.

Unfortunately, their qualification pathways operate strictly on a full-time schedule. Combining intensive weekday classes with a regular job can prove tough, so checking timetable commitments early helps you plan your routine effectively.

Pros

  • Low-cost tuition starting at €100 for select full-time courses
  • Practical entry requiring only five artwork samples
  • Private studio spaces and digital labs
  • Diverse subject tracks including fine art, jewellery, and illustration

Cons

  • Core qualification courses require a full-time commitment

Founders Joe Neeson and John McCormack, both professional sculptors, champion an encouraging studio environment focused on tactile creation.

Their interactive classes welcome both curious beginners and experienced creators across tactile sculpture and digital media. Additionally, weekend workshops provide intimate ten-person mosaic sessions with all raw materials supplied upfront.

We noted that their community-focused exhibitions connect students directly with local artists, so expanding practical skills feels natural and rewarding.

Keep in mind that securing a full course refund requires at least seven days of advance notice. So, double-checking your schedule before confirming a seat avoids any unexpected loss.
