How We Chose the Best Math Tutors in Cork
1. Breakthrough Maths

Programs: Junior Certificate, Leaving Certificate, and Primary School
Address: The Elysian, Eglinton St, Ballintemple
Contact: +353 87 202 0389, [email protected]
Hours: Monday – Sunday: 8 am – 9 pm
Breakthrough Maths is a straightforward tutoring centre in Cork that’s all about prepping the students. We like the consistent classes, which are held four times a week, that can address learning gaps for primary and secondary students.
They focus on group grinds, which are primarily held online. Whilst there aren’t any face-to-face sessions, the learner will only interact with the tutor during the sessions, so the focus is still there.
Moreover, every tutoring class is recorded, allowing the learner to watch the sessions at any time. Flexibility is also a main thing here, as there are two topics with every grind, so the student gets to choose which one they want to study.
In addition to the flexible subjects, they still manage to follow the Irish curriculum. All these fantastic things are available for primary, junior, and senior students.
What’s truly brilliant is the way their tutors clearly explain maths. From what we’ve seen, they manage to do so with loads of patience whilst keeping the session fun and engaging.
The tutor was fun and made maths easy
“My daughter has always struggled with maths due to being dyslexia and dyscalculia that’s till she started grinds using breakthrough maths. I have never seen her excited about maths before. The online approach really suited her being able to chat on a one to one with her teacher that no one else could see helped build her confidence as she felt no judgement and no question ever felt like like a silly one. The recorded classes are fantastic, she can pop in and out as required. The tutor was fun , made maths easy for her especially for a student whos brain thinks different. I can’t recommend breakthrough maths highly enough.”

The classes are really helpful
“The classes are really helpful and are good craic too. These are the words of my daughter, she really enjoyed the classes and attended herself without any reminding, she also found the recordings great if you miss a class or need to revise a topic.”

2. Alpha Maths

Programs: Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Business, Economics, and Irish Language for Leaving Certificate
Address: 87 S Mall, Centre
Contact: 021 4279794, [email protected]
Hours: Monday – Sunday: 9 am – 7:30 pm
The flexibility of Alpha Maths is what caught our attention at first. Then, the level of teaching is what made us stay, where experienced tutors provide comprehensive notes to ensure each student won’t fall behind.
They mainly teach post-primary students, so lower grade levels will have to find another tutoring centre. It’s a bummer, but they do teach various Leaving Cert subjects, like chemistry and physics.
It’s also worth noting that they offer summer grinds and mid-term break workshops for students who need to study a wee bit more.
Availability is top-notch as well, as they’re open to individual, group, in-person, and online sessions. Individual grinds have limited spots, though, so it’s strongly recommended you book ahead to secure a slot.
Moreover, their group maths grinds only accept up to six students, which is exactly what we want because it brings a more focused attention from the tutor. Plus, the results we’ve seen have been remarkable, as many parents noted their kids’ improvements.
Very helpful and gave me a lot of confidence
“I found this really good! Stephen was really helpful and gave me a lot of confidence. The classes and material really helped with study, and the exam held at Easter was really helpful so close to exams to see where I was at. Would definitely recommend!”

3. Summed Up Maths

Programs: Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate
Contact: [email protected]
Hours: 24/7 (online only)
When you feel your child has a rather busy school schedule, Summed Up Maths is a good option for maths grinds in Cork. This completely online tutoring service teaches students across Ireland.
They’re quite accessible, although the absence of face-to-face sessions is a bit of a shame. But the flexibility of providing recorded sessions for junior and senior levels means students won’t miss a grind.
For example, they work by offering a full syllabus that uses an exam-style course. It brings a sense of familiarity to every learner, which comes with weekly plans to ensure students are prepared for test days.
Their tutors deserve a mention too, as they’ve got a solid background, including receiving high scores in maths. But it’s the way they explain the subject clearly that deserves a highlight, as most parents noted the increased confidence in their kids.
If you ask us, they’re worth the money. Every tutoring program includes a free first lesson and 24/7 support from the course community.
Amazing
“These guys are amazing, can’t recommend them highly enough. We came across them by chance, their passion for maths has helped my daughter reignite her passion for maths and for that I cannot thank them enough”
-Bernadette O’Reilly, Google Review
Every topic was made very comprehensible
“I did the sixth year cram course for the two weeks leading up to the leaving cert and I can genuinely say it made the world of a difference for me. I went from a low H4 in the mocks to a H2 in what I found a difficult leaving cert paper. Every topic was made very comprehensible and I honestly cannot recommend Summed Up a maths enough!!”

4. Kumon

Programs: Maths and English
Address: Garryduff Sports Centre, Rochestown
Contact: +35387 634 4766
Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 9 am – 5 pm
- Saturday: 9 am – 12:30 pm
When we’re talking about self-paced learning, Kumon has nailed it to a T. This English and maths tutoring centre focuses on developing a solid foundation for students to gain confidence whilst solving math problems.
The self-learning provides an individualised approach, which is great, but it limits the tutoring style some students might need.
To give you an example, the tutors won’t help with homework or test preparation, but instead solve worksheets independently, since they don’t follow the curriculum.
It may not be for everyone, but students can develop confidence and concentration during maths. Most parents we spoke with liked the consistency of this maths tutoring centre, as every kid will take home worksheets to establish a study habit.
The centre is accessible as well, with disabled access, a family waiting area, and a parking space. Additionally, the free assessment is worth a shot to see if this maths tutor will work for your child—no pressure to pay immediately!
My kids reached a high level of competency
“Having put three kids through the maths programme, I couldn’t recommend it enough. They have reached a high level of competency, and have learned to be more independent in their work. Grainne and her staff are always very patient, and I love the flexibility she offers with workload. I’d highly recommend Kumon.”

5. Grade Academy

Programs: Leaving Certificate Maths and Junior Certificate Maths
Contact: [email protected]
Hours: 24/7 (online access)
Accessibility is one of the primary focuses of Grade Academy, a Leaving Cert and junior cycle grind that focuses on video lessons. Yes, each student can access the on-demand grinds any day of the week.
We’ve seen the video grinds help many students, but the lack of one-on-one tutoring threw us a wee bit. The flexibility is a winner, though, since there’s a focus on course video lessons, with a 12-month access, which students can go back to anytime.
These courses are still helpful, we found. There are over 10 hours of lessons, all made by experienced teachers, which are exam-focused to bring a more structured approach. They even come with a one-time payment and unlimited access to the courses.
And from the look of things, all these on-demand maths grinds have helped many students raise their grades. It’s a good source, in our opinion, as every course comes with thorough explanations that can fill in learning gaps.
An amazing resource for students
“This is an amazing resource for students! It is much cheaper than grinds and provides a comprehensive overview of the course. I love the notes at the end of each leassoy and the fact that you can skip back and relisten to something you may have missed is so helpful”
-Ann Sibi, Google Review
Very easy to follow and navigate
“These tutorials are well taught with simple examples & diagrams to show students first hand the principles of learning. Very easy to follow and navigate, would recommend”
-Padraig Moran, Google Review
