The 5 Best Payroll Services in Ireland

Everyone loves payday, except for the payroll officer that is. Although paying your employees may seem as simple as handing out their salary, it’s way more complex than that.

Aside from making sure all calculations are correct down to the cent, you also have to make sure you’re up to date with legal requirements, payslips are issued on time, and more.

To help you focus more on other aspects of your business, we’ve selected the best payroll services in Ireland to help take the weight off your shoulders. We also discussed our thoughts and opinions for each service and made sure to list down all their pros and cons.

How Much Do Payroll Services Cost in Ireland?

Before we get into it, let’s dissect how much payroll services charge.

Payroll services often charge per employee and per payroll run so there isn’t a standard price list since each company has a different number of employees and payment scheme. This doesn’t include set-up costs, year-end processing, and other additional services that you can avail of.

Hence, the total charge will always be different for each client. Payroll services normally conduct an initial consultation to see how they’ll be able to address your needs and create a plan for you while others have existing packages for you to choose from with additional services you can avail of for a fee.

Even so, we’ve listed the prices of how much the payroll services of our entries cost in the table below:

Payescape has been offering cloud-based payroll services to businesses in the UK since it was founded in 2006. Payescape’s strong point is that it’s constantly in the works of upgrading its online portal.

Their services range from payroll administration to full tax-related filing and processing.

One of the things we liked about Payescape’s payroll services is that it’s available on the cloud so you can access all your data 24/7/365 in real-time on any device.

When you start the onboarding process, they’re going to give you a dedicated account manager to help you throughout the migration process such as training you and your employees, setting up the system according to your preferences, performing trial runs, and eventually handing you over to your dedicated HR team for future support.

They have free guides available for download on their website, but if that isn’t enough you can also book a demo online so they can have a staff member teach you in real-time.

Another great thing about Payescape is that their contracts are flexible. Since you pay for their service monthly, there’s no long-term commitment required.

They also offer additional services such as a Human Resource program and their Time and Attendance program which you can seamlessly integrate with their payroll system.

However, in terms of their payroll services, they don’t offer any add-on features so everything that they offer is already available in their existing package.

Another thing to take note of is that their main office is located in Northern Ireland, specifically in Ballymoney so it might be inconvenient to get there.

Overall, Payescape is great for people who want a basic yet fully-automated payroll system and are eyeing systems with sister programs that can easily be adopted into the existing program.

Pros

  • Rates available online
  • Book a free demo
  • Cloud-based payroll system

  • Has add-on programs that can integrate with payroll
  • Flexible contract

Based in Louth, Nanny Payroll offers weekly, fortnightly, 4-weekly and monthly payroll plans for employes to easily pay their nannies.

Offering unlimited support, Nanny Payroll can handle issuing payslips, handling tax allowance splitting, and even providing you with payroll summary sheets so that you’re always on top of everything.

However, their contracts are done annually which means you’re going to have to invest in a long-term commitment.

Another thing we liked was their Employee Self-Service app which your nanny can access 24/7/365. Here, they’ll be able to view all their payslips online and even apply for leave which you can choose to accept in the app, too.

Another noteworthy service that Nanny Payroll offers is creating a tailored employment contract for an additional fee of €35 to make everything as clear as possible between you and your nanny. But if you just want an employment contract, they can also do that for €50.

In case you’re worried about other technicalities, they’ll also handle your Revenue PAYE registration and coordinate with them on your behalf.

All their service rates are available on their website so you won’t need to worry about fluctuating rates.

We were a bit disappointed to see that they don’t have a physical office anywhere in Ireland so they’re purely online. They also have quite short operating hours so you won’t be able to reach them past 5PM on weekdays or at all on weekends.

All said, Nanny Payroll is a great service for people looking for a convenient and easy way to handle paying their nannies and ensuring that all their legal obligations as an employer are met.

Pros

  • Rates available online
  • Has Employee Self-Service app
  • Wide variety of plans
  • Handle all PAYE-related affairs
  • Cloud-based payroll software

Cons

  • Only for those who employ nannies
  • No physical office
  • Closed on weekends
  • Long-term

The software kept pace with an ever changing situation

“We have been using Brightpay Ireland for the last three years and have found both the software and the customer support excellent. We use a bureau licence and process wages for 100+ clients. They provide timely in year updates and training for the software. When the COVID-19 wages support schemes came in 2020, the software kept pace with an ever changing situation that meant we could provide our clients with accurate payroll and also satisfy Revenue compliance. When we needed extra licences the team went the extra mile for us.” – James MacMahon, Google Reviews

A1 Payroll offers tailored payroll services to do all the payroll managing and processing for you.

Their system allows you to do a variety of functions such as add or remove employees or even calculate all commissions, bonuses, and reimbursements. Employees will be able to view a summary of their electronic payslips with their individual PIN numbers.

We also like how friendly their services are for budding entrepreneurs. If you’re a new business, they can also help you in setting up all the employment forms and keeping you compliant with legal requirements.

One thing to take note of is they provide you with a dedicated account manager so you won’t have to deal with different people each time you have a query or encounter a problem.

If you aren’t completely sold on A1 Payroll, they offer a free 60-minute consultation where you can discuss the specifics of what you need.

Their website also offers a variety of resources on various social welfare, employment, and taxation forms and guides. They can also help you register for the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme if you’re qualified for it.

However, we were a bit disappointed to see that they didn’t have any add-ons, so whatever you’re paying for, that’s it. We wish their service was more customizable, similar to what other competitors offer.

All said, A1 Payroll is a great basic payroll service that gives you all the functions the program should offer. They’re great for start-ups and SMEs who don’t really require that much out of their payroll service aside from the basics.

One of the things we liked was that no matter what package you choose, their services are fully cloud-based and your data is backed-up every 3 hours.

We were disappointed to see that the max number of employees for their most expensive package is 25 so you’ll be charged a small fee of €1 for each new employee you’ll be adding to the system.

You can also only avail of their tax saver scheme on their Enterprise package.

They have a few add-on features for a small fee such as tracking your personal and company mileage as well as adding your company logo to payslips.

If you want to explore the software yourself, they have a free trial that you with no limitations. Once you download it, it updates automatically so you won’t have to worry about getting the latest version.
