If you want to create an actionable plan to keep yourself healthy, we’d recommend you go to Dr. Philip Cullen.

A general practitioner at Cullen Hanly Family Doctors, he will assess your lifestyle, take into account your age and previous health issues to establish your susceptibility to certain diseases.

From there, he can create a comprehensive programme specifically tailored for you that will help prevent the development of diseases and keep you healthy.

So, if you want to be encouraged to choose healthy behaviours and put the “eat healthy, get enough sleep and exercise” mantra into a more doable frame, paying Dr. Philip a visit should help.

But the clinic where he practices isn’t limited to disease prevention: they also offer other services such as childhood vaccination, family planning, men and women’s health and travel vaccinations. So, if you need any of these services, you might want to come for a consultation.

They have two locations: one in Pery Square and another in Castletroy. The Pery Square clinic was founded by Dr. Philip’s late father in 1946 and was eventually made to function exclusively as a Family Practice.

Dr. Philip was joined by another doctor, Dr. Damien Hanly, and together, they opened a second centre in Castletroy. That one primarily provides family planning and health screening services.

There seem to be logistical and practical issues with the Pery Square premises, but the Castletroy facility is wheelchair-friendly and has free surface and underground parking. It’s located on the grounds of Castletroy Park Hotel.

Both branches are open during weekdays, but only Pery Square accepts walk-ins (9-11:30AM). They do have a number for you to call outside of clinic hours in case of emergencies.

Pros

  • Comprehensive health programme for disease prevention
  • Has 2 branches
  • Free parking at Castletroy
  • Walk-ins accepted in Pery Square
  • Wheelchair-friendly facilities
  • Has contact number for emergencies

Cons

Most women ignore menopause symptoms probably because they think it’s not that big a deal. In many cases, they are either embarrassed or haven’t found a doctor they can trust.

If you know someone struggling with either issue, we think Dr. Negin Reyhani of Old Windmill Medical Centre is a solid choice in this particular field. She completed her specialist training with a special interest in menopause, contraception (like the insertion and management of coils and implants) and women’s health in general.

But aside from women’s health, she also has extensive experience in other fields like joint injections, minor injuries and surgery which is a bonus.

Given her credentials and experience in these areas, and being a woman herself, we think Dr. Negin is someone other women who need help in this regard would be comfortable with.

Although these are her specialisations, Old Windmill Medical Centre also offers other services such as children, travel and flu vaccinations, cryotherapy, STI screening, blood tests, executive men and women’s health checks among others.

So, if you need any of these services, you can drop by the clinic Mondays to Saturdays for a consultation. If you’re a previous patient and just need a repeat prescription, there’s no need for you to go—you can ask for it over the phone.

Another thing we find convenient is their location. Although they don’t have parking in the premises, there are a lot of parking spaces nearby. The facilities are also wheelchair-friendly.

Before heading out, please note that they are currently not doing routine issues (including routine blood tests) due to Covid-19. They also don’t accommodate walk-ins except for emergencies.

Pros

  • Specialises in menopause treatment and women’s health
  • Disabled access
  • Nearby parking
  • Repeat prescriptions done over the phone

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Currently not doing routine issues

There’s this misconception that wisdom comes with age. That might be true to an extent, but a lot of Dr. Bryan Halpin’s patients are saying he is wise for someone so young.

A general practitioner at Treaty Medical Centre, Dr. Bryan is reputed to be not just knowledgeable in his field, but also shows kindness and a genuine compassion for his patients.

We think those qualities are rare in a doctor since so many of them now just expect the patient to nod along to what they’re saying during consultations. Thus, we’ve chosen Dr. Bryan for our list.

Dr. Bryan finished medical school in 2011 and worked as a junior doctor in various specialties: Paediatrics, Geriatric Medicine, Palliative Medicine, ENT Surgery, Oncology and Haematology, and Psychiatry.

He has completed his post-graduate studies in Palliative Care and is currently undertaking postgraduate studies in Occupational Medicine.

But the clinic where he practices, Treaty Medical Centre, doesn’t just offer GP services; they also have specialty services such as sexual health screening, ingrown toenail removal, minor operations and suturing, employment medicals among others.

The clinic also has a comprehensive lineup of services in dermatology particularly anti-wrinkle injections, viral wart removal and sun-damaged skin treatment.

If you’re a new patient and would like to visit, the clinic is open by appointment during weekdays. They do have a number you can call out of hours.

If you’re a previous patient and need a prescription renewal, you can do it in two ways: by filling up their online form, or by submitting a paper form which can be hand-delivered, faxed or posted by mail.

It’s not as easy as requesting by phone, but they want to avoid errors and retain an accurate record, which we think is understandable.

Pros

  • Specialty services offered
  • Out of hour number available
  • Online repeat prescription

Cons

  • Closed on weekends and public holidays
  • Didn’t specify if they offer phone consultations

Very kind

I recently moved to Treaty Medical Centre and have met Dr Halpin twice. He is very kind and listens to me, and does his best to help me. He has even rang me to see how I am doing. Not many doctors would do the same. I really appreciate the effort he has gone to for me – RateMDS Reviews

RoyalMed Health Centre provides a wide range of medical services such as General Practice, antenatal care, childhood vaccination, health screening, immunotherapy among others.

Their medical service is provided by Dr. Jacek Sulmowski, a General Practitioner with 20 years of experience. He came to Ireland in 2007 and worked in various GP practices.

His special interest, however, is in allergy treatment and Lyme disease.

There aren’t a lot of doctors in Limerick who specialise in Lyme disease, perhaps because it isn’t a common infection and incidents are quite low. This makes having Dr. Jacek in the city all the more valuable.

If you think you might be afflicted with this condition, or perhaps you need help with your allergy, you might want to pay Dr. Jacek a visit.

RoyalMed Health Centre is conveniently located near Limerick Railway Station and is open everyday (except weekends) by appointment. But like other clinics, if the situation is urgent, they have a number you can call out of hours.

The clinic also highlighted that their comprehensive medical services are open to the international community and to visitors from abroad. If you’re on a holiday in Ireland and need medical care, you can receive free emergency GP care if you have a valid EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) or UK-NHS card.

Pros

  • Allergy treatment and Lyme disease specialisation

Customer Reviews

Thanks to the doctor, I avoided surgery

“With a hand on my heart, I recommend the doctor, full of professionalism and ability, accurately and “humanly” diagnosed bursitis, evacuation of fluid from the elbow plus a steroid agent and a problem with a headache, the predecessors prescribed some steroid ointments, antibiotics from space and so I walked with this bubble on the elbow like a jerk, thanks to the doctor I avoided surgery and my hand is doing well. I recommend it!” – Kruk, Google reviews

Thorough, factual and reliable

“I highly recommend it on behalf of my grandmother who came to visit me and unfortunately got sick. Doctor Jacek Sulmowski is a very thorough, factual and reliable doctor, and at the same time a very nice and kind man. The visit was part of the European Health Card (issued in Poland), so it was free. The visit was arranged for a specific time, i.e. it took place without waiting in a queue. I would highly recommend it!” – Magdalena H, Google reviews

People choose to stick to a doctor they are happy with. Usually, the gauge they use isn’t just qualifications and awards, but a doctor who listens to them.

Dr. Valerie Patricia Keating of Newtown Medical Centre is one of the doctors we’ve picked for our list because she has such a reputation. Her long-time patients said they have relied on her for their family’s health and she knows their history inside and out.

We think this connection a doctor has with his (or in this case, her) patients is vital in increasing the chance of a faster diagnosis and therefore, a faster treatment.

Dr. Valerie obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in University College Dublin in 1996 and has also accomplished her specialist training as a General Practitioner. She is one of the 610 practitioners delivering medical services in Limerick county.

Her qualifications and experience aside, the clinic where she practices, Newtown Medical Centre, is also reputed to deliver quality medical services. They have been around for more than 20 years, providing a wide range of services like men and women’s health, blood tests, STI screening, vaccines, heart health care, etc.

They have a cosmetic clinic that provides Botox, fillers, retinol peels and other cosmetic services in a safe and confidential environment. But one service they have that we think is invaluable is their focus on children’s health.

If your child is under 6 years old, for instance, you can register him or her to get free GP care and periodic wellness checks.

Another thing we like about the clinic is that they offer home visits. It has an extra charge, of course, but we think having that option is helpful, especially during these troubling times.

Pros

  • Clinic has been providing service for 20+ years
  • Free GP care for children under 6 years old
  • Home visits offered
  • Emergency contact 24/7

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Didn’t specify if they offer phone consultations

How can I tell a good doctor from a bad one?

Education, training and accolades are some of the factors that indicate a doctor’s competence. But it takes more than those things to be a good doctor.

There are other nonacademic skills a doctor should have. When choosing a doctor, make sure you look for these characteristics:

A good doctor listens.

When you feel sick, you go to a doctor in the hope that he can make you well again. You tell him what you feel, your history, fears and questions.

Unfortunately, some doctors either discount, dismiss or think you’re exaggerating your symptoms. To make a proper diagnosis, a doctor should know how to listen, to be open and responsive to your concerns.

A good doctor has the ability to share his knowledge.

A doctor shouldn’t just tell you what to do. He should also be able to explain the bigger picture of your health and give you options if there are any.

And he should be able to share these with you in a language you can understand.

A good doctor makes you feel cared for.

You shouldn’t be treated like you’re just another patient with a list of medical problems. Your doctor should make you feel you’re a human being with unique needs and that you’re in good hands.

A good doctor should be easy to reach.

Of course, all doctors have clinic hours—after all, they also have other obligations to fulfill. However, if your doctor can’t be reached, he should at least have a representative you can call in case of urgent situations or when you need to make or change appointments.
