The Best Doctors in Galway

To pick Galway’s best doctors, we looked at:

Credentials and expertisemore than the services offered by their clinic, we considered how helpful their qualifications are to most people looking for a physician.

Thus, none of the doctors here has a very specialised field.
Clean record – Even if they have stellar credentials, we would not have considered them if their names have been associated with any kind of malpractice or negligence.
Patient reviews – while it’s not uncommon to find negative reviews about doctors, we picked physicians from clinics whose reviews are largely positive.

Without further ado, here are our choices for Galway’s best doctors!

Dr John Morris is one of Galway East Medical Practice’s founding partners. One of the main things we admire about him is his experience as a humanitarian worker.

This general practitioner (GP) has been as far as Haiti, the Philippines, and more, working alongside aid agencies such as Doctors Without Borders, Haven, and the WHO.

Heart disease and stroke prevention and management are one of his special interests. In fact, his master’s thesis relates to heart disease and stroke risk factors among Irish citizens.

Dr Morris also focuses on mental health, and we particularly like this statement of his, “I listen to my patients and it is often through this that we find the solutions.”

Dr Morris’s expertise also includes vaccines, tropical medicine, antenatal care, and children’s health. Additionally, he is currently a clinical fellow in global health at the Irish College of General Practitioners.

Meanwhile, we think it’s really convenient for patients to seek treatment at Galway East Medical Practice due to its extensive health services. They offer treatments for young and adult patients.

Services for both men and women include sexual health, nutrition and fitness, general health, etc. There’s antenatal care for mothers and contraception options for women.

Dr Shastri Persad is originally from Trinidad and Tobago (a country near South America) but it’s here in Ireland where he studied medicine. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Dr Persad has had surgical training and is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland.

As such, he conducts minor surgical procedures such as excision of skin lesions, carpal tunnel injections, foreign body removal, and more.

Moreover, what makes him pretty unique among other GPs is that he is also a cosmetic practitioner and is trained in botulinum toxin injections.

For the couples out there, Dr Persad’s clinic can be a great choice to know your family planning options. This is because it provides all forms of contraception (e.g. Mirena, Implanon, etc.).

And because he’s had surgical training, Dr Persad can carry out no-scalpel vasectomies, a form of permanent sterilisation for men.

You’ll even find a video of Dr Persad himself explaining this procedure on their website.

Meanwhile, consultations with Dr Persad’s clinic are pretty flexible since you can request early morning appointments on Thursdays and Fridays.

Plus, there’s an out-of-hours service from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am, Monday to Thursday. However, this service is given by other GPs in the area.

Medicals:
9:00 am to 11:00 am (Tuesday & Thursday)

One of the older doctors on our list, Dr Kieran Whyte has been a GP for more than 30 years.

So if you’re the kind of patient who leans more towards doctors with lengthy experience, Dr Whyte may be the right GP for you.

He’s earned diplomas in various medical fields, such as in mental health, child health, and musculoskeletal injury and management. Add to these his certificates in family planning and traffic medicine.

Moreover, being an aeromedical and seafarer examiner is one of Dr Whyte’s specialities. He is recognised by the Department of Transport and the Irish Aviation Authority to serve as such.

Actually, Dr Whyte reserves his Tuesdays and Thursdays to conduct the following: aeromedical examinations, seafarer medicals, diving medicals, and travel vaccinations.

Plus, he is a sports enthusiast. This is apparent in his profession as he also takes a keen interest in sports medicine.

Additionally, the proximity of his clinic to Galway City Centre makes it a convenient location for plenty of his clients.

Nevertheless, the biggest issue we have with Dr Whyte is his availability. He probably has the shortest clinic hours on our list. This could be because he also practices at Mervue HSE Clinic since the said clinic also appears on his website.

At least, his clinic here at Father Griffin Road offers home, out-of-hours, and phone consultations.

Pros

  • Aeromedical and seafarer examiner
  • Specialities include sports injuries & medico legal reports
  • Offers home, out-of-hours, and phone consultations
  • Clinic is near Galway City Centre
  • Pricing info available

Cons

  • Clinic has only 1 doctor
  • Limited clinic hours

You can also see her for your family planning needs such as for the insertion and removal of intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants.

Regarding amenities, Seapoint Medical Centre gets a thumbs up from us for having wheelchair access, a kid-friendly waiting area, and baby-changing facilities.

Plus, there’s free parking and the clinic itself is just 15 minutes from Galway City Centre.

Aside from Dr John Morris whom we mentioned earlier, Dr Aaron Brennan is another doctor from Galway East Medical Centre who deserves a spot on our list.

For one, he has a background in multiple sub-specialities of medicine, namely, neurology, cardiology, renal medicine, infectious diseases, palliative care, and more.

Second, he has a particular interest in chronic disease management. This includes diseases such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, multi-morbidity, and more—something that numerous people suffer from.

Third, Dr Brennan also takes interest in migraine treatment and prophylaxis because of his own migraine condition. Consequently, we think patients who suffer from the same thing would be glad to know there’s a doctor who can relate to them.

Dr Brennan’s areas of special interest don’t end here. He states that he is passionate about bone health and has undergone training in osteoporosis.

On top of this, Galway East Medical Centre offers a variety of consultations like phone and video consultations and home visits, if necessary. The clinic has wheelchair access, to boot.

How to Choose a Doctor for Your Needs

Aside from finding a capable doctor, you’ll need to consider other factors as well to make treatments more convenient and comfortable:

  1. Speciality

One of the ways you can start your search is by identifying what kind of doctor deals specifically with your condition. That is if you already have an idea of what you’re suffering from.

For instance, cardiologists mainly deal with heart diseases. If you have a kidney problem, you may need to seek a nephrologist.

Oncologists treat cancer patients; neurologists treat conditions such as strokes, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and so on.

For women’s health, you may need to visit an obstetrician or gynaecologist. For men’s health, this doctor may be a urologist.

And the list goes on. But if you’re unsure of what doctor is the right one for your illness, we suggest going to a general practitioner first.

  1. Availability

It’s a good idea to choose a physician that you can reach most of the time. To know this, check their clinic hours.

See if they also practice in other clinics or hospitals, and know their schedules in each. And if you’re working and don’t have much time, inquire if the doctor offers an out-of-hours service.

In addition, don’t forget to ask if online/phone consultations are also available.

  1. Clinic’s location and amenities

It’s best to pick a clinic that’s relatively near your home as this will make doctor visits more convenient for you.

If you own a car, check for parking space. If you need to bring your children along, see if the clinic is kid-friendly.

Meanwhile, wheelchair access and other amenities for the disabled are things to  look for if you’re bringing a patient with disabilities.

  1. Other considerations

Always phone ahead to know if the clinic accepts walk-in patients. And if they require patients to make an appointment, check if there’s a booking fee.

Also, be aware of their cancellation policy. This means that there may be fees if you cancel an appointment, especially if you do so after the time period they give patients.
