Located in Merrion Square, the National Gallery of Ireland was established by an act which was passed by Ireland’s parliament in August of 1854. What makes this first on our list is that it has everything to offer that assures your enjoyment.

The National Gallery of Ireland offers different exhibitions consisting of historical masterpieces and contemporary art pieces. The gallery also rotates its exhibitions depending on the season and the availability of pieces.

The gallery also offers a shop for memorabilia if you’d like to take home a souvenir. And if you are hungry or thirsty, you can visit the Gallery Cafe to rest and recoup.

What we love about the National Gallery of Ireland is that there is no entrance fee and they offer guides for groups. But if you’d like to help make the experience better in the future, you can donate any amount to keep the gallery running.

Although, in our opinion,  it would have been better if exhibitions catered to wider audiences Moreover, we would have liked it if exhibitions regularly changed to keep things interesting.

Worth the visit

“Absolutely beautiful. Free admission—located in the center of Dublin. Most certainly worth the visit; the art is astounding and the building is not only historic but breathtaking. Plan on being there for a couple of hours at least. Staff very helpful and friendly.” – H. M. B. Fredericks, Google Review

Something special in Dublin

“Honestly, I just can’t believe that it’s free. These artists are some of the most famous in the whole world and to be able to spend a few hours here with so few other guests was awesome. I’ve been to world-famous museums but this just feels so much more personal. It’s really something special here in Dublin and it’s presented so well with really well-informed and helpful staff. The exhibits of the Irish artists are probably my favorite-I kept writing down all their names, people I couldn’t believe were left out of my art classes in college. And my daughter spent loads of time staring at all the Yeats. Thank you Dublin, well done!” – E. H., Google Review

Customer Reviews:

Treasured experience

“When visiting Dublin last spring, we stumbled on the Doorway Gallery in one of our walks near Trinity College.  The owner, Denise, is a pleasure to work with, and each artist very, very well. We fell in love with Padraig McCaul, put a down payment on our favorite painting of his, and it was recently delivered to our home in Tucson, Arizona. It’s so beautiful, the FedEx Delivery man stayed to watch us open it, fell in love with it, and wanted to know all about it. It lights up our living space and we will treasure it always.” – Maria L. Menconi, Google Review

A real warmth

“A visit to the Doorway Gallery is a real pleasure. There is a warmth to the gallery, which makes the visitor feel welcome. The range and style of paintings is extensive. The service we received from Denise and her colleagues was first class. In our experience The Doorway Gallery is one of the best in Dublin.” – Brian McClogan, Google Review

The Hugh Lane Gallery is a legend in the art world with a collection that rivals the top museums of Europe. Finished in 1909, The Hugh Lane Gallery’s history goes back to well before its birth thanks to Sir Hugh Lane, who made it his dream to transform Dublin into a cultural capital.

What we love about Hugh Lane Gallery is that the gallery is committed to promoting understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of modern and contemporary art. This is in line with the Irish art practice where visual art and practice exhibitions can be seen at the gallery.

To add, admission to the gallery is free!

Aside from those, special exhibitions such as art focusing on children can be accessed via their Kid’s Club. Special concerts are also held in the gallery which makes it stand out from other galleries.

Now, we think it would be better if a more uniform business time is put into practice, though. Other than that, Hugh Lane Gallery is a perfect gallery to start your Dublin itinerary.

Kevin Sharkey Art’s gallery in Dublin is one of our favourites that you should check out when you’re free.

Their art exhibitions look colourful and free-spirited. We thought that the unique and abstract designs on these would look great in modern rooms.

For example, a lot of homes these days have minimalist features. We think their paintings would stand out against light colours or solid walls.

They ship paintings worldwide as well. We’re happy that there’s almost no limit to who can enjoy their art, though shipping times take 3 to 5 days in Europe and 7 to 10 days in the USA.

Along with this, they manufacture their own crates too. For us, this ensures its quality or durability.

In addition, they use DHL for safe delivery. They’re a global leader in logistics, so we believe deliveries would likely be handled well without causing damage.

Kevin Sharkey Art’s gallery is open every day. However, keep in mind that they’re only open for a few hours and are closed during lunch.

You may also send them an email to enquire about their available paintings. This is so you know what to expect when you visit the gallery.

Pros

  • Available for viewing every day
  • Showcases many abstract artworks
  • Their paintings look great in modern homes
  • Ships paintings globally

Cons

  • Limited open hours and closed during lunch
  • Shipping times vary and may take a while
