Women looking to break a sweat without taking hard hits will love the Tuesday padwork and self-defence class at MMA Cork. Their session skips all sparring to focus strictly on boxercise and flexibility for just €12.50.
Head coach Arann Maguire brings elite credentials to the gym as an International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) certified coach. He’s a former bantamweight and featherweight champion.
We dropped by to watch their evening session, and the welcoming vibe immediately put us at ease. Plus, we noted that their members can mix striking and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) under one roof.
The main downside is that casual trainees face a €15 drop-in fee, which sits right at the top end of local Cork rates.

Friendly and welcoming mma training environment
Absolute legends here, I’ve spent a number of years studying different martial arts and have met my fair share of trainers, I have to say the friendly and welcoming environment these people created makes going every week so easy, their good humour is contagious and learning from them is an absolute pleasure. I’d advise giving them a look into if you’re potentially looking to start MMA or if you’re looking to return to it. I can’t wait for my next class when I get back from my holidays away 🙂

Patient self-defence instruction for all ages
My grandson and I have been training here since December 2022. We were made to feel welcome by the instructors and members from the very first session. Arthur and his team of instructors are very knowledgeable and very patient when it comes to teaching the finer points of self defence. As a 58 year old who has practiced types of martial arts for over 20 years I would highly recommend the Institute of Krav Maga Cork to people of all ages for self defence and fitness.

Encouraging self-paced shaolin training
I’ve been attending class with six months and I can’t recommend the school highly enough. Master K is a friendly, engaging teacher who will let you work at your own pace while giving plenty of encouragement. Classes are fun, with lots of variety – she is hugely knowledgeable on all things Shaolin. Definitely recommend the school.

In fact, a fellow grappler told us that the six-week beginner course makes learning fundamental positional control completely stress-free.
However, the timetable is strictly grappling-focused, so you’ll need to find another gym if you want striking classes like boxing or kickboxing.

Supportive bjj community for beginners
As someone who joined Bjj Cork with no martial art experience, all the coaches and members created such a welcoming atmosphere from the moment I joined the club. Although it is an individual sport I have never felt such a strong sense of community as I have while training here. The amount of encouragement I have received from coaches and members has helped me to improve my confidence in both Bjj and also in life! I would highly recommend training here whether you are a beginner or an experienced martial artist!
