The Best Japanese Restaurants in Limerick

A Japanese restaurant is only as good as the authenticity of the food, drinks, and services offered. This is the reason why it’s popular and a favorite of foodies.

To help you decide where to have your next bite of authentic Japanese food, here are the factors we considered:

Food quality – Food must be well-prepared to make it tasty and delightful. Here, we considered the overall taste, presentation, and the Japanese touch given to the foods that were served.
Service – For a restaurant to be tagged as among the best, there needs to be an attentive and reliable staff to ensure guests’ comfort while dining. The waiting time for food to be served was also noted.
Atmosphere – Japanese restaurants are typically clean, quiet, spacious, and have a Japan-inspired vibe. We checked if the restaurants listed have this kind of ambience.
Value – Aside from an extensive food menu, the quality of service and food must be on par with the prices. Thus, we factored in customers’ satisfaction in their dining experience.
Accessibility  – We considered the location of the restaurant if it’s easy to locate even online, and is close to public transportation stops.

Situated in Upper Denmark Street, Sakura Sushi Bar is an accessible food restaurant that offers authentic Japanese food and desserts through dine-in, takeaway, and even delivery.

What we like most about this Sushi Bar is its extensive menu of quality Japanese food that includes sashimi, varieties of temaki, udon, ramen, and even bento items.

A must-try here is the Jo Moriawase because of its complete set of sashimi, nigiri, norimaki, and temaki. It’s basically an all-in-one plate of sashimi and fresh rolls that’s good for two people.

If you’re into sushi and rolls, we recommend the eight-slice Dragon Roll of fried prawn topped with avocado for a sweet and crispy mix of flavors. This is best paired with ebi and chicken tempuras to complement the crispiness of the roll.

We also appreciate their inclusive food option of maki, tempura, and soba to cater vegan customers or those who want green alternatives.

Service-wise, the staff are attentive and are quick to prepare food orders. Needless to mention, food delivery is quick for those who can’t go out but are craving for a real Japanese taste.

However, you may have to always double check its operating hours since it varies per day and can only accommodate a few people. You may have to use the telephone as it does not have an email contact.

The prices are also higher compared with other Asian food hubs in Limerick. But all in all, the food menu is superb due to its use of seasonal and fresh flavors that are worth trying.

Pros

  • Fresh and tasty food
  • Wide variety of authentic Japanese food
  • Has fast delivery
  • Vegan-friendly

Cons

  • No email address
  • Varying operating hours

If you want a lovely lunch or dinner with a fresh and healthy menu of a real Japanese restaurant, Taikichi is the place to be. Whether it’s for lunch, dinner, dessert, or drinks, this place has a menu for any occasion at any time of the day.

What we like in this place is its vast sushi nigiri options of 15 types with unagi, prawn, seabass, salmon, and tuna that are cooked differently. Our favorite here is the eel nigiri that is very tender and well-seasoned.

We also love the ramen servings, especially the Kimchi Ramen/Udon that has a unique taste from the combination of kimchi chilly broth, fresh seafood, and sliced beef and pork.

If it’s your first time eating here, the Chef New Recommendations are the must-haves in your order list because these are personally crafted by their chef. If you want our suggestion, try the unusual Okonomi Yaki or pancake with seafood and vegetables.

Taikichi’s dinner menu that includes the chef’s recommendations are available throughout the restaurant’s operating period. The desserts and beverages that include Japanese wines are also offered.

Another good thing about this place is its Japanese-inspired interior with artificial cherry blossoms at the ceiling. The yellow lights enclosed in hanging lanterns match the wooden furniture sets.

However, the food prices here are more expensive than other Japanese eateries. Some customers have also complained of some unwelcoming staff during their stay.

Nonetheless, we think it’s worth it to check out this place for its good ambience and authentic Japanese food.

Pros

  • Great ambience with Japanese interiors
  • Best sushi options
  • Allows reservation
  • Dinner menu available all day

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Staff issues

Soba Asian Street Food Restaurant is a place to consider when you want to experience a taste of different Asian cuisines including Japan’s. Whether in Cork or in Limerick, you can choose from its five different branches to dine in!

Despite being named a street food hub, what we like about this restaurant is its flexible menu that has main dishes from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Japan, and China. You can definitely try all from its menu if you want a flavorful mix of spicy and sweet foods.

Soba is also great in making Yaki Udon and Yaki Soba with the addition of fresh chicken and local vegetables. To add, it also prepares the popular Pad Thai with a complete package of noodles, seafood, and Asian spices.

We also like that it offers vegetarian and gluten-free options for its noodles. We even appreciate its allergen notes for picky eaters.

Like other good Japanese food restaurants, Soba offers convenience through delivery right through your door in case you can’t go out.

If you want to dine, it’s open every day until 10:00 p.m. You may only need to secure a spot because Soba in Limerick is a small place for many people.

Moreover, the issue you might encounter here if you want a full Japanese dining experience is its limited Japanese food options. The popular sashimi and sushi are not offered here.

Not a big deal, though, because the few Japanese foods it has are flavorful with a touch of other Asian cuisines and without the use of msg. Surely, the foods are healthy and delightful.

Pros

  • Good combination of Asian cuisines
  • Website is updated and easy to navigate
  • Has varying daily specials
  • Healthy cooking with no msg

Cons

  • Few Japanese food offered
  • Limited capacity

If you’re looking to dine in a cozy and quiet place for Japanese food, look no further! Kyoto Sushi House and Noodle located in George’s Quay offers a good range of maki, sashimi, nigiri, and other classic Japanese bites.

We like this restaurant’s large menu for rolls and sushi where you can have a taste of Japan from its 25 choices. Aside from using fresh ingredients, these rolls are given in bigger servings and are well-presented.

In our opinion, the best choice here is the Seafood Tempura Roll with a compelling mix of tempura, salmon, tuna, prawn, eel, and some fresh greens. You can also go with the Stamina Roll if you’re in search of a subtle egg and seafood combo.

We also like that it has many choices for drinks ranging from hot coffee to beers, teas, and Japanese and Western wines.

For vegans, Kyoto Sushi House and Noodle is generous in serving tofu salad and Yasai Tempura.

The restaurant is also clean, quiet, and has a Japanese-inspired design – a good place to enjoy with family and friends. The staff are also quick to get back to your requests and even your queries online!

However, this food house does not have a website and is reliant on calls and emails for digital transactions. A customer also shared that there might be queues during peak hours.

Still, with the large servings of fresh sushi and good drink options, it’s worth a visit.

Pros

  • Calm and peaceful ambience
  • Open everyday for dine-in and delivery
  • Large servings, especially for sushi
  • Responsive staff

Cons

  • No website
  • Long waiting time

Our lowkey favorite dining place, the Yummy Yummy Asian Street Food in Athlunkard Street in Limerick, offers the most affordable tasty food options among the restaurants in this list.

Known as a collective of Asian cuisines, we love that it uses locally sourced and thoroughly picked ingredients to create healthy, traditional, and authentic Eastern foods. Though prices can start cheap at €3.00, the foods are presented in a lovely manner.

Along with Southeast Asian popular food like the Mamak and Pad Thai, the Japanese Udon and Yaki Soba are the top choices of customers. Surely, the catch here is the freshness of the soya sauce and the sprout toppings.

Also, we like the affordability of its Chef Special menu that is centered on Thai classics, seasoning, and herbs. We love the tenderness of the duck and its mix with black soya bean sauce.

Our team also appreciates the Dinner Sets A and B that are best for those who can’t choose which food combinations to order. When you’re with kids, you can even add the Kids Mix Starter.

The only downside if you want to eat purely Japanese food is the limited menu that doesn’t include sushi, sashimi, and karaage, and tempura. Lunch is not offered here as it opens late at 4:30 p.m.

All in all, Yummy Yummy Asian Street Food serves authentic Eastern food that uses quality ingredients that are fit to customers’ budgets.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Has combo of Asian food
  • Ingredients are locally sourced
  • Clean and bright location

Cons

  • Limited Japanese food in the menu
  • Opens late
