The 5 Best Clinics for Blood Tests in Dublin

Whether it be for medical reasons or just a check-up, having your blood test done in a reputable clinic is crucial for accurate results.

Luckily for you, we’ve looked around and come up with a unique list of the best clinics for blood tests in Dublin.

How much do blood tests cost?

Under the General Medical Services (GMS) Scheme, medical cardholders are eligible to take blood tests to diagnose or monitor a condition without any charge.

However, patients who aren’t medical cardholders or are seeing private general practitioners (GPs) may be charged a fee.

The cost may vary depending on the GP, but the benchmark rate for bloodwork is around €20 and €60. To add, some GPs may also charge patients a separate fee for their consultation services which costs around €40.

The D2 Medical Centre boasts an extensive range of medical services, from COVID-19 antibody testing to men and women’s health. That said, we think it’s a great option if you’re looking for an all-in-one clinic.

Focusing on its bloodwork-related services, it also has a wide scope of tests available. These include blood cholesterol tests, blood glucose tests, coagulation tests, and electrolyte tests among others.

To boot, it also has a number of answered FAQs on its website, such as why you need a specific test and how to read the results. We find this pretty helpful in case you have a few questions.

So, we definitely have to give it to this clinic in terms of blood test variety. However, we were a tad disappointed that it only administers blood tests weekly from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm despite being open later than that time.

That said, we think it’s also quite an inconvenience that it isn’t open on weekends. Hence, clients will have to squeeze in time within the weekday because of the clinic’s limited testing hours.

We also think it’s worth noting that it’s quite strict about its no walk-in policy. So, we highly suggest booking an appointment either via the website or by phone.

On a brighter note, we also think it’s great that the clinic accepts medical health insurance. So if you’re a cardholder of VHI Healthcare, Irish Life Health, and Laya Healthcare, you may want to check this out.

Aside from that, you don’t have to stress about how to pay as it accepts online payments. It also has flexible payment methods such as PayPal, Debit Card, and Credit Card.

We also heard positive things about its staff. In particular, past clients vouched that they’re attentive to the needs and queries of their clients.

Pros

  • Wide selection of blood tests
  • Accepts medical health insurance
  • Online appointment booking available
  • Pricing info available
  • Online payment available
  • Has flexible payment methods

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Only administers blood tests from 8:30 am to 1 pm on weekdays
  • No walk-ins

Just as its name suggests, Children’s Health Ireland is a hospital only for patients ages 0 to 16. That said, if you’re not part of this age cohort, you may want to consider the other entries on this list.

Even so, we like that it’s exclusive for children as it definitely makes the trip to the hospital less busy and stressful. The interiors are adorned with colorful shapes and characters.

We think it’s worth highlighting that CHI uses multi-sensory spaces. We find that this is a great help for young patients with autism.

To boot, we found it impressive that it also has visual social stories that can be told to young patients to help alleviate anxiety before getting their bloodwork done.

While more widely known for its Urgent Care services, it can also perform phlebotomy services or blood tests. We like the wide selection it has, which includes ESR, FBC, and CRP, among others.

However, we were a bit bummed that it doesn’t offer tests for ammonia, lactate, ACTH, and PTH as well as group and hold and crossmatch services at the moment.

Speaking of tests, it’s important to note that the clinic only accepts CHI-Temple Street Hospital laboratory order forms. So, if you have a referral note from another hospital, that won’t be entertained here.

Going back to the positives, we like that you can conveniently book a blood test via the clinic’s website. But it doesn’t have any additional info on its pricing and payment methods, which we think is an oversight.

Overall, we’re pretty happy with what we’ve seen so far. We also like that the clinic is open daily, so you can stop by any day of the week at your earliest convenience.

Pros

  • Open daily
  • Wide selection of blood tests
  • Only accepts patients ages 0 to 16
  • Uses multi-sensory spaces and visual social stories
  • Online appointment booking available

Cons

  • No pricing and payment methods info
  • Only accepts CHI-Temple Street Hospital laboratory order forms

A GP center that focuses on family health, Henry Street Medical Centre offers services such as blood tests, full medical check-ups, sexual health-related screenings, and more.

While it is open from Monday through Friday, it only administers blood tests from Monday through Thursday until 12PM. We find this a bit restrictive.

We were a bit iffy about the lack of details that it provides on the kinds of blood tests that the clinic administers. We definitely think this is useful info, especially for patients that are seeking a specific kind of blood test.

On a brighter note, we do appreciate that its pricing info is available. Blood tests cost €50 but this does not include the consultation fee.

As for payments, we like that it has flexible payment options. Namely, the clinic accepts online payments, card, and cash payments.

However, we were bummed that it doesn’t accept medical insurance at the moment. So, it won’t be a surprise if this is a dealbreaker for medical cardholders.

We do appreciate that it offers online booking. This definitely makes it convenient for patients to schedule an appointment in the comforts of their homes 24/7.

We also think it’s worth noting that the clinic accepts walk-ins and same-day appointments. So, it definitely gets a few brownie points for convenience here.

As for its staff, we’ve heard promising remarks from past clients we’ve gotten in touch with about their attentiveness and friendliness.

Pros

  • Accepts walk-in patients and same-day appointments
  • Needs more details on the variety of blood tests it offers
  • Online payment available
  • Has flexible payment methods
  • Online appointment booking available

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Only administers blood tests from 8 am to 12 pm on Mondays through Thursdays
  • Doesn’t accept medical insurance at the moment

For all things blood test-related, you should check out Bloodworks. This multi-award-winning clinic was founded by Linda O’Connor in 2014 after having worked as a phlebotomist since the 1990s.

With that said, we found its scope of blood tests pretty impressive. It has tests dedicated to finding out more about age-related issues, pregnancy, and overall wellbeing.

Testing is done at the private lab, which means that you won’t queue for long unlike at GP clinics. Its private lab offers blood testing services for adults, children ages 2 and above, and on-site corporate testing.

We also liked that it has a turnaround time of 48 hours and sends your results as a PDF file via email. This way, you won’t have to go through the trouble of going back to the lab to fetch your results.

While we’re on the topic of convenience, we also like that the clinic has online booking. You can go through its list of blood tests and book an appointment then and there.

On top of that, it also has its pricing info available, so you know how much your bill will be at the online checkout.

We also think it’s pretty handy that it has an option to avail of their SMS reminder 24 hours before the session starts. That’ll be helpful, especially for those who tend to forget about their doctor’s appointments.

We were just a bit bummed that the clinic doesn’t indicate if it accepts medical insurance. Though patients can call to inquire, we think it’s a lot more convenient if this info is on display.

Pros

  • Multi-award-winning
  • Offers on-site corporate testing
  • Pricing info available
  • Wide selection of blood tests
  • Turnaround time for results is 48 hours
  • Results are sent via email
  • Offers SMS reminders

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • No info on medical insurance

Liffey Medical offers a wide range of medical services such as general practice, men and women’s health, and blood tests among others.

We like that it has a wide selection of blood tests to choose from, such as a standard blood test, perimenopause screening, female fertility blood test, and more. So, you can say we were pretty happy with the variety.

We also appreciate the convenience of its online booking system as you can see all the available timeslots you can choose from.

We also like that results will be discussed with you over the phone and sent to you via email. This way, you’ll only need to make one trip to the clinic to get your tests done, then wait for the results to be sent over.

The convenience doesn’t end there as it has online payments, too. You can pay via card on the website or in-clinic.

Apart from that, we appreciate that its pricing info is up on its website. This way, patients have an idea of how much their total costs will be.

Speaking of, the clinic also accepts medical insurance, which is definitely a plus for medical cardholders. However, it doesn’t elaborate much on the details of this, so you’ll have to inquire further.

We also think it’s worth noting that it offers same-day appointments and accepts walk-ins. However, we still encourage you to book an appointment to secure a slot.

This is because it closes quite early, at 4 pm, and it isn’t operational on weekends. So, it might be difficult to squeeze you in, especially if the clinic’s quite busy.

Pros

  • Accepts walk-in patients and same-day appointments
  • Offers online payment
  • Has flexible payment methods
  • Online appointment booking available
  • Results are sent via email
  • Pricing info available

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Not much info on medical insurance
