There are so many reasons why we think Dr. Liam Regan of Nassau Clinic Weekend Doctor deserves a spot here.

He’s one of the very few GPs in Dublin who operates on weekends until evenings—hence the name “Weekend Doctor.” Basically, he provides urgent out-of-hour medical care when your usual GP isn’t available.

In other words, Dr. Regan isn’t here to replace the relationship you have with your existing GP. Continuity of care will still be provided by your current GP, if needed.

Dr. Regan’s private practice offers a full range of GP services including primary care, sexual health screenings, and immunisation. It seems like he’s also a popular choice for patients with COVID-19 symptoms, seeing that his clinic also offers free testing services.

In that case, you have the option to book a phone or video consultation. Otherwise, you can also see him for a face-to-face consultation.

Sadly, he doesn’t treat children below 6 years old. He also doesn’t accept medical cards or GP visit cards for adults, which means that you’ll have to pay for services out of your own pocket.

His consultation fees aren’t exactly the most affordable ones in Dublin either. But for the convenience and accessibility of the services he offers, we think it’s still very reasonable.

Pros

  • Wide range of services
  • Open daily until evenings
  • Teleconsultations available
  • Quick service and response times
  • Central location

Cons

  • Relatively expensive
  • Doesn’t treat children below 6 years old
  • Doesn’t accept medical cards/GP visit cards

Dr. Yayicsia Escalona is another fantastic choice when it comes to GPs. Originally from Venezuela, she has many years of experience in respiratory medicine, women’s health, and diabetes management.

She now has a private practice located at the heart of Dublin, which she shares with her co-doctors. And because there are other consultants available, this means that you also have other GPs to choose from, just in case Dr. Escalona isn’t available.

We also like how comprehensive their services are, from general medical services like GP consultations and tests to specialised services like counselling.

In fact, COVID-19 call consultations are also free of charge. So if you have any symptoms, you can simply schedule a test and consultation here at no additional cost to you.

We think accessibility also isn’t an issue here. Despite being centrally located, they also offer teleconsultation services.

Apart from that, they’re also open on Saturday mornings—another huge plus! Just keep in mind that Dr. Escalona doesn’t practise on Saturdays, but patients may contact her should there be any concerns.

  • Free COVID consultation
  • Ideal for Spanish and Portuguese speakers
  • Central location

On a related note, we also had to include her here primarily because of affordability. Compared to other GPs, we’re glad to see that she charges relatively low rates for general and extended consultations.

She also has special rates for students, families, and children, which really makes her a great choice for everyone.

Another thing worth mentioning is that her clinic is also affiliated with LukeDoc—an out-of-hours GP co-op. This means that you can see a GP, including Dr. Hennessy, should an urgent medical issue arise in the evenings or weekends.

Dr. Michael O’Brien has been running his own private practice for over two decades now. He’s one of the best and most trusted doctors around southern Dublin for different reasons.

First, he has been practising since 1998, with a special interest in travel medicine, sports medicine, and paediatrics. In fact, he served as the team doctor to the Irish Under 20 Rugby team for 7 years.

He works alongside Dr. Romaine King who specialises in palliative care and gynaecology. This diversity makes them a terrific choice for patients coming from different backgrounds.

In terms of pricing, we’re glad to report that they also sit on the affordable end of the spectrum. We also like the fact that this clinic offers discounts for students and children.

Considering that they’re located further down south of Dublin, their location may be a dealbreaker for some. And while they’re closed on weekends, you can still contact EDOC for out-of-hour urgent care.

Pros

  • Wide range of services
  • Specialises in travel and sports medicine
  • Affordable prices
  • Student rates available
  • After-hour services available

Cons

  • Unclear if teleconsultations are available
  • Relatively far location
  • Closed on weekends
