The 5 Best Nursing Homes in Galway
Whether it be in preparation for your future or for an elderly loved one, choosing from one of the best nursing homes in Galway is a stellar investment.
To assist you, we’ve handpicked a unique list of homes that will ensure you a great quality of life and high-quality care. We’ve listed their fees and answered a few FAQs, too.
How much do nursing homes cost?
Before we head on to the price comparison of our entries, let’s quickly go through the government’s Nursing Homes Support Scheme.
Under this scheme, the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF) has been assigned to negotiate with facilities and agree upon a maximum rate they can charge.
The NTPF will then send these details to the Health Service Executive (HSE). The HSE is the one in charge of running the Nursing Homes Support Scheme and pays the balance after individuals have paid their contribution.
Weekly rates start at around €1,000. Even so, this may not reflect the actual price, as the HSE has a share of the costs, too.

1. Brookhaven Healthcare
Facility | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Activities | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Staff | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Accessibility | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Brookhaven Healthcare operates five purpose-built nursing homes across Ireland located in vibrant communities. For their Galway home, in particular, they accept patients that require specialist care.
Their facilities include a number of en suite, twin, and single rooms. We also think it’s worth noting that residents are allowed to personalize their rooms with items and decorations that remind them of home.
Speaking of home, they also allow residents to visit family and friends as well as enjoy holidays, overnight stays, and even outings, too.
Boredom shouldn’t be a cause for concern at the nursing home, though, since they employ a full-time activity coordinator who creates a weekly calendar with social programs and activities that cater to residents’ interests.
These include arts and crafts, interactive card games, dance lessons, massages, live music, movie nights, and more. They also celebrate holidays and residents’ birthdays, too.
Apart from that, the facility also has a number of recreational and activity rooms that they can explore and enjoy. This includes a landscaped garden, sensory rooms, coffee and tea rooms, hair salon, and more.
When it comes to residents’ health needs, we think you’ll be glad to know that each resident is assigned a GP and nurse to monitor and care for them 24/7.
They also have a number of medical professionals such as physiotherapists, dentists, and so on to help care for the residents. However, some medical care services require additional costs.
As for visiting hours, family and friends are allowed to visit the residents every day as long as it doesn’t disrupt their mealtime and closing hours. However, this may vary depending on the current COVID-19 restrictions.

- Operates five nursing homes across Ireland
- 24-hour nursing care

2. Rushmore Nursing Home
Facility | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) |
Activities | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Staff | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Accessibility | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) |
For over 40 years, the Rushmore Nursing Home has been providing hands-on care in their quaint yet cosy 27-bed home.
Since they’re quite small, this nursing home may be more suitable for individuals who prefer a small-sized facility and a tight-knit community.
They offer resident-specific needs to short and long-term residents. To accommodate this, they require a thorough consultation before admission to ensure that they’re capable of meeting the patient’s needs.
We also think it’s worth noting that they also accept emergency admission. However, keep in mind that acceptance is at their discretion.
The facility is located at the top of Salthill, so you can expect a quiet and peaceful residential area. We think this is a great way for residents to enjoy the fresh air without being too far from the shopping area, pharmacy, coffee shops, and so on.
Oh, another aspect worth mentioning is they have a variety of interactive activities for residents. These include armchair aerobics, card games, and bingo as well as spending time outside through walks.
Pros
- Accept emergency admission
- Hosts fun recreational activities
- Peaceful and quiet location
Cons
- Can only accommodate 27 residents

3. Blake Manor Nursing Home
Facility | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Activities | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Staff | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Accessibility | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Since 1981, this family-run nursing home has been servicing a wide variety of residents from those that require rehabilitation assistance to long-term care.
Formerly known as St. Columba’s nursing home, the Blake Manor Nursing Home may have changed its name but not its homey atmosphere and attentive staff.
This remote and spacious facility spans 17 acres that allow residents to roam around, take in the fresh air, and appreciate the abundance of wildlife.
Speaking of the view, did we mention that all rooms have a scenic view of their walled orchard? Though all bedrooms have different views of the property, they’re all still breathtaking in their own way.
Aside from that, all rooms are wheelchair-accessible, which we think will make moving around a lot easier for residents. They also have private telephones, internet access, and en suite facilities.
Much to the delight of anxious family members, all rooms also have an emergency button to call nurses. We think this definitely deserves brownie points from us!
As for activities, they have an in-house coordinator. Their therapeutic activities include physiotherapy, reflexology, and beauty therapy, while their entertainment activities include musical entertainment, day trips, yoga, board games, pet therapy, and more.
Hence, we don’t think you’ll have to worry about boredom here. Apart from that, Blake Manor is also open to facilitating activities of any resident’s specific interest, too.
Pros

- All rooms have emergency buttons and are wheelchair-accessible
- All rooms have en suite facilities
- Lots of therapeutic and entertainment activities

The Clarinbridge Care Centre is an award-winning facility just 30 minutes away from Galway City. Hence, it’s near enough for frequent visits but farther out for some peace and quiet.
Here, residents’ rooms are bright and airy and have an undisrupted view of their landscaped gardens. Rooms are also equipped with a multi-channel TV, telephone, and a spacious en suite bathroom.
We also think it’s worth highlighting that all rooms are equipped with a nurse call system. So, residents have easy access to the nurses 24/7.
As for their other amenities, they also have a peace room, which is where some residents and guests frequent to pray and take a moment of silence. They also have a grotto where many enjoy daily walks, too.
When it comes to their healthcare-related services, we appreciate the personalized plan they have for each resident. To be specific, they provide individualized social, occupational, and recreational therapies.
We appreciate this, as it shows that the staff members take time to assess and cater to each resident’s physical, emotional, social, and psychological needs.

I was going to move my Mum to Sligo where I live, but I was so impressed by everything I decided to leave my Mum there, I really can’t praise the home enough. I travel every week to see Mum, so it would have being much easier to have Mum in Sligo, I don’t think I’d have got anywhere as good. The care my Mum gets is just fantastic.
