A graduate of the University College Cork (UCC), Dr. Brendan Crowley has been a GP for the last 30 years. His fields of expertise include general practice, occupational therapy, and minor surgeries, among others.

He founded and is currently practicing at the Douglas Medical Centre along with 4 other reputable doctors. Meanwhile, his surgeries are performed at their Ringhanmond branch.

We think Dr. Crowley’s most noteworthy feature is that he has decades of experience in performing ingrown toenail removal surgery. Since this condition is known to cause severe pain, it’s important to get the procedure done by an experienced professional.

While they’re open only on weekdays, Dr. Crowley is only on duty every Tuesday and Thursday from 2 pm to 4 pm. We were a tad disappointed that he’s only on duty 4 hours weekly to see his patients.

That said, we suggest arranging an appointment ASAP, which you can only do via phone. We were also quite bummed that they didn’t have an online booking system as it would’ve been more convenient for patients to see the available time slots.

Nevertheless, we’ve yet to hear any complaints about Dr. Crowley being unable to see his patients. Actually, patients we’ve gotten in touch with vouched Dr. Crowley’s attentiveness and care.

We were also pleased to find out that they accept medical health insurance. You’ll simply need to call your insurer for their individual claim forms (private medical insurance) or fill up the Med 1 form on their website.

Pros

  • 30+ years of experience as a GP
  • Specializes in ingrown toenail removal surgery
  • Accepts medical health insurance
  • Clinic has multiple doctors

Cons

  • Only available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 4 PM
  • No online booking available
  • No mention of phone/online consultations

Dr. Louise Nestor is a UCC graduate and has been practicing medicine since 1994 with a special interest in women’s health and dermatology. For women’s health, she mainly performs cervical screening and ante-natal care and offers contraceptives.

Aside from that, we also think it’s worth noting that her clinic offers a fully accredited yellow fever vaccination service. Hence, we think it’s a viable choice if you plan on traveling to destinations that require this vaccination.

In case you’re a bit anxious about seeing Dr. Nestor, her former patients can vouch that she’s a kind and gentle doctor. This definitely gets plus points for quality customer service.

Aside from Dr. Nestor, there are also a number of doctors and nurses on duty at the center. So you shouldn’t be concerned about the center being short-staffed.

Regarding appointments, we were a tad bummed that they don’t have an online booking system available. So, you’re going to have to do things old school and give them a call to schedule.

As for payments, we like that they accept cash, check, as well as credit and debit card. It’s also pretty convenient that you can make card payments over the phone, too.

However, they don’t mention if they accept medical health insurance. So, you’ll have to inquire if you’re eligible for any medical expense coverage.

After graduating from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) in Dublin, Dr. Dani Farah furthered his General Practice training in East Berkshire, England (Oxford Deanery). Since moving to Cork in 2011, Dr. Farah has been a practicing GP at Wilton Medical Center.

Aside from Dr. Farah, there’s only one other practice manager. Hence, the small team may be a cause for concern for some.

Even so, the clinic operates on a strictly appointment-only basis. This way, each patient has a dedicated time slot where they can be seen by Dr. Farah comfortably.

But if it’s an emergency or a serious concern regarding children, these patients will be accommodated even without an appointment.

Focusing on services, we like the wide array of medical offerings, from children’s health to minor surgeries. Hence, we think that the Wilton Medical Center can be a one-stop clinic for families.

We also think it’s worth mentioning that it offers telephone consultations. This way, you can address any concerns within the comforts of your home.

As for payments, we appreciate its flexible payment options. You can pay cash, check, or even by card.

A graduate of UCC, Dr. Tom English has been practicing at Broad Lane Family Practice since it first opened in 1985. Aside from being a GP, he has trained and tutored Irish College general practitioners for the past 28 years.

While he has a special interest in orthopedic medicine and joint injections, Dr. English’s most noteworthy feature would be that he’s trained in dementia care.

Hence, he may be a viable option if you’re looking for a doctor with significant experience in this field. Regardless, he’d still make a good choice as a family GP.

Aside from Dr. English, there are three other doctors who practice here, all with their own specialties. Combined, their services include family planning, vaccinations, and minor procedures among others.

We appreciate that they have their pricing info available on their website. This way, patients have an idea of how much to expect when they’re billed.

We also think it’s worth noting that the clinic accepts medical health insurance. However, it doesn’t give out much info about this, so it’s best that you inquire if you’re a medical cardholder.

Apart from that, we were a bit bummed that it doesn’t have an online booking system on its website. So, you’ll have to make an appointment the traditional way by giving it a ring.

On a brighter note, we were happy to hear from customers that Dr. English and his team are accommodating and friendly. Hence, it’s no surprise that many of the clients we’ve gotten in touch with withheld no reservations about recommending them.

After graduating from UCC, Dr. Elva Corkery furthered her formal General Practice training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Medicine, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation, and Care of the Elderly in Cambridge, UK.

Since returning to Cork in 2007, she’s established her own practice. Here, she offers family planning, general health services, vaccinations, and more.

Assisting Dr. Corkery is Nurse Hayes. We were a tad iffy about their small team as this could result in fewer available slots, which could be a concern for some.

Even so, they operate strictly by appointment only. This ensures that each patient has an ample amount of time to spend with Dr. Corkery.

We think their online booking system makes it convenient for patients to schedule on their preferred date and time. We also like that you can phone them if you have an urgent appointment request.

As for fees, we like that their pricing matrix is available online as it gives patients an idea of what to expect. While they do accept medical cardholders, they don’t offer much information about this, so you’ll have to inquire further.

Oh, did we mention that they offer free childhood vaccinations and antenatal care? We think this will be of great help, especially if you have a tight budget.

Overall, we’re pretty happy with the variety of services Dr. Corkery offers. Hence, we think she’d be a viable choice for a family GP for people young and old.
