The 5 Centres for the Top Orthopaedic Specialists in Ireland for a Pain-Free Life!

If you’ve ever had a bad joint problem and needed surgery, you’re going to have to wait until your hair turns grey. The slow public healthcare system has long been a problem for the Irish, and it’s definitely no craic.

When I had a hand injury after a bad fall while hurling, I had to wait for ages until I could see a doctor. And so I decided to get faster treatment, because my articles aren’t going to write themselves—being out of a job isn’t going to pay the bills, you know.

If you’re terribly tired of the waiting game, my team and I have found the best orthopaedic specialists in Ireland. It’s time to duck out of public healthcare waiting lists and finally take that joint pain away!

What is the cost of seeing an orthopaedic specialist in Ireland?

Seeing an orthopaedic specialist in Ireland can cost anywhere from €200 to €250 for the initial consultation. Follow-ups will typically cost much less.

How We Chose the Best Orthopaedic Surgeons in Ireland

Qualifications and Expertise: Successful surgeries are possible in large part due to the doctor’s expertise and specialisation. An orthopaedic surgeon who has diagnosed and performed loads of surgeries for various injuries is highly experienced.
Quality of Care: Patient safety is always at the top of the list, so it’s paramount that the surgeon and their staff provide a high level of care to minimise complications and lead to better recovery.
Bedside Manner: Surgeries are scary, and it’s important that the patient trusts the doctor completely. They must show compassion, empathy, and respect throughout.
Safety: Safe practices are highly important to prevent complications. So, the place must be clean, and the whole process should be centred towards patient care.
Availability: Orthopaedic surgeries in Ireland tend to have long waiting times. For this category, we give massive points to surgeons who can accommodate patients quickly and assist with emergency cases.
Insurance: Providers that accept health insurance get a leg up, but it’s understandable that it’s not always accommodated, since not all doctors who work in private healthcare can accept self-pay patients.
Cost: Consultation and follow-up costs that are within the average range in Ireland are prioritised because not all patients can afford expensive fees.

One of our most trusted orthopaedic surgeons in Ireland is Mr. Mihai Vioreanu, who is highly decorated with international expertise in knee and hip surgeries. He was trained in Canada and Australia, after all.

He’s an accessible surgeon, practising at the Sports Surgery Clinic and the Mater Private Hospital. He’s a busy fellow, so it’s typical for wee delays in appointments.

But that doesn’t come around too often, as he and his team have shown an incredible work ethic. The professionalism and supportive approach won us over, since they know how to set the surgeon’s schedule properly to avoid this issue as much as possible.

From what we’ve gathered, safety is paramount in Mr. Vioreanu’s clinic. The patients we spoke with felt safe, even before a fairly terrifying surgery.

Additionally, the aftercare has been brilliant. We were delighted to hear about patients on the mend and successful surgeries, who have had no issues since Mr. Vioreanu and his staff were diligent with the recovery phase.

Pros

  • Internationally-trained surgeon
  • Works in two clinics
  • Serious about safety protocols
  • Excellent aftercare support

Cons

  • Busy; some delays in appointments

The surgery went great without any complications

“I had a great experience with Dr. Mihai Vioreanu and can’t recommend him enough. He performed surgery on my ruptured ACL and it went great, without any complications. I experienced very little pain following the surgery and was back playing football within 11 months. I highly recommend Dr. Vioreanu as a surgeon.”

Incredible clinic in every aspect

“Incredible clinic in every aspect but Mihai Vioreanu is fantastic in everything he does from start to finish. Unlike other Specialists he is very personable, friendly and really cares about his patients. He is the most down-to-earth Professional I have ever encountered. I would highly recommend Mihai and the entire team at the SSC. My only regret is that I can’t give more than 5 Stars.”

As far as expertise goes, Mr. Derek Cawley has got it all covered. His specialisation had led him to prominent facilities outside of Ireland, including the renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in the UK.

He’s a brilliant one, as he works on projects that involve advanced technologies that could help with surgery efficiency. For example, he’s pursuing augmented reality applications that could be used in the operating room in the future.

What stood out the most was his professional and personable approach to helping patients navigate the reality of a surgery, as well as finding other possible options that could help with their joint problems.

Judging by what we’ve seen, Mr. Cawley’s bedside manner is top-notch. The majority of people we spoke with noted his empathy and how easy it was to talk with him.

But seeing as he practices in the private healthcare system, he cannot accommodate patients without health insurance. If you do have one, receiving an appointment won’t be long, given that he tries to see his patients as soon as he can.

Pros

  • Worked in prominent international facilities
  • Works on advanced technologies
  • Personable and empathetic approach
  • Sees patients as soon as possible

Cons

True professional on every level

“I can not thank Dr. Cawley enough for the exceptional care my 84 year old mother received from him. He is a true professional on every level, always going the extra mile for his patients. My mother had a spinal fusion in January, and the surgery went great. Recovery wasn’t quick for her, but she did it and is forever grateful to Dr Cawley. She couldn’t go on in the pain she was in, but Dr Cawley truly has changed her life. She is back to her self again after a terrible two years, thanks to Dr. Cawley. Dr. Cawley made her feel at ease with everything and explained things so well. He was always a phone call away for me when I had any concerns about her and I really do appreciate that. He was a gentleman. Dr Cawley and his wonderful PA Karen are the dream team. Thank you for everything”

Top-class surgeon and a gentleman

“I cannot thank Mr Derek Cawley enough for his professionalism, empathy and compassion. I am six weeks post-surgery after Cervical & Fusion surgery, recovering well but most of all I am no longer in constant pain. Mr Cawley and his secretary Karen were always at the end of the phone or email to alleviate any concerns or fears pre and post operation. I cannot recommend Mr Cawley enough, he is not only a top-class surgeon but a gentleman too. He is a very caring and understanding man, with an excellent beside manner, he goes out of his way to help you. Thank you Mr Cawley, I hope I do not need to see you again but should I, I know I am in safe hands.”

For instance, he provides ligament reconstruction, osteotomy, and total hip replacement. Frankly, his expertise astonished us, especially when we learned about successful surgeries from his patients who had received an improved quality of life.

It didn’t come as a shock because Mr. Hannah takes every surgery incredibly seriously. The level of care we’ve seen has been brilliantly consistent, from the initial consultation to aftercare support.

Given his busy schedule, he has limited availability at his Galway clinic. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean it’s tough to see him, as his team is accommodating and will try to fit you in so you can see the doctor at the first opportunity.

Fantastic at his job

“I would highly recommend Dr. Andrew Hannah. I had a hip replacement a few weeks ago, and beforehand he really put my mind at ease. He explained everything to me and I felt I could ask him anything. He was very easy going which I liked about him. Fantastic at his job, and also all the staff on the ward and in the Theatre were all very nice. I am recovering very well Geraldine Flanagan, Oranmore”

– Geraldine Flanagan, Google Review

Kind and patient-centric surgeon

“I cannot recommend Mr. Hannah highly enough if you are looking for a kind and patient centric surgeon who listens and understands. There was a short time frame from my initial appointment to the surgery which I was very grateful for having suffered pain and mobility issues for a number of months. I am now 4 months post op and I am back to doing the activities I enjoyed before with no issues. Thank you Dr Hannah.”

Contact: +4477 95140944, [email protected]

Hours:

  • Monday – Thursday: 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
  • Friday: 9:30 am – 3 pm

Website

What we admire about Mr. Paul Magill is his brilliant CV, as he’s a consultant trauma and orthopaedic specialist in Ireland. He performs knee and hip surgeries at three clinics, while also carrying out fractured bone surgeries in Craigavon.

He’s one of the most accessible orthopaedic surgeons in Ireland, considering he sees private patients in Belfast, Newry, and Dublin. Sure, that’s brilliant and all, but it also means he’s mad busy, so expect a wee wait sometimes during appointments.

It’s nothing to worry about because his consultations are very thorough (presumably why some appointments run late). We’re grateful for his meticulousness, anyway, because he’s always informative about orthopaedic surgery pros and cons.

Best of all, he can provide service for Northern Ireland residents through the cross-border directive orthopaedics, since he practices in Belfast and Dublin.

Another thing we’re grateful for is that Mr. Magill can perform knee and hip surgeries for self-funded patients, despite being a private practice. Most medical insurers recognise his clinic as well—overall, an accessible and brilliant surgeon.

Pros

  • Consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon
  • Practices in three clinics
  • Provides a cross-border directive
  • Accepts self-funded patients
  • Recognised by most private medical insurers

Cons

  • A bit of waiting time

Brought a long-standing problem to a successful conclusion

“After 3 years back and forward to local appointments, my father booked a private consultation with Mr Paul Magill. An examination, a couple of x rays later, and by the end of that one consultation, Mr Magill could clearly diagnose the problem and proposed a full knee replacement. We are extremely grateful to Mr Magill’s professionalism, expertise and personable approach which has brought a long standing problem to a successful conclusion. We highly recommend Mr Paul Magill as the go to specialist for any knee or hip issues.”

– Elaine Tighe, Google Review

Knee and hip replacements have recovered well

“I had both my hip replaced in November 2022 and then my knee in April this year by Mr. Magill. Both have recovered well and I’m able to move about much better now with less pain. I will need more surgery in the next few years and I would not hesitate in having Mr. Magill do the operation.”

Mr. Patrick Carton specialises in sports-related injuries of the hip, knee, and groin. But what amazed us was the thousands of surgeries he has performed (more than 3,000, actually).

The number was no shocker, since his expertise is broad, including ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, and hamstring and adductor repair. Basically, he can perform surgeries on loads of joint-related sports injuries.

The bit that popped out was his focus on advanced techniques, particularly in hip surgeries, for more effective results. You see, he usually presents these emerging advances at both national and international conferences.

We very much appreciate his complimentary X-ray and scan reporting, where a patient can request the doctor to review these without the need for a paid consultation. It’ll take about a week, though, which we understand since surgeries get priority.

Mr. Carton’s office is very accommodating, anyway. We were pleased to learn that the majority of patients mentioned zero problems with their schedules and aftercare support, and that he’s an orthopaedic surgeon worth travelling for.

Pros

  • Thousands of surgeries performed
  • Specialises in sports-related injuries
  • Uses advanced techniques
  • Offers free X-ray and scan reporting

Cons

  • A bit of a wait for X-ray reporting results

Consultation was so informative

“I had a consultation on January 14th 2021 under a recommendation and naturally I was a tad anxious, also I traveled from Dublin. The receptionist Catriona was extremely polite, professional and helpful. The consultation with Doctor Carton so informative and with me not having any medical qualifications the details of my injury were explained in details that I could follow and totally understand. I would highly recommend Doctor Carton to anyone for anyone with an injury that falls under his field of expertise.”

– Andre Jenkinson, Google Review

Great outcome after my hip surgery

“I had a great outcome after my hip surgery by Dr Patrick Carton. I had a hip arthroscopy and labral repair done in March 2018. Prior to my surgery I had hip pain walking and going up stairs and elevations. I also had to stop playing tennis. Post-surgery I’m doing great. I’m back to my active self, including playing tennis doubles a few times a week, cycling, walking etc. I found Dr Carton to be an extremely professional and effective surgeon. He was able to diagnose my problem and rectify it with surgery when other consultants were not. I’m also off all pain medication since my surgery. I’m absolutely delighted with my outcome, especially being back to playing tennis. I couldn’t recommend Dr Carton enough.”
