Top 9 Hotels in Donegal That Feel Like a Home Away From Home

Just hearing (or reading) “Donegal” is enough to make me lose self-control to not kick off my shoes and head for the coast. When I was younger, I used to go for family holidays up there—we usually rent a small cottage in a spot near Ardara.

Now, as a child, I always thought I wanted more excitement, like amusement parks and all that carry-on. But the minute we pulled up, and I saw that view of mountains rolling down the ocean, I was placated, and that was that.

Plenty of memories I now cherish were made in Donegal: walks along quiet beaches, seeing local wildlife, camping, or exploring small markets. These days, I still reckon that this place is worth visiting over and over.

So, if you’re planning a trip soon, our team has rounded up the best hotels in Donegal where you can feel at home away from home. Check them out below!

Lough Eske Castle is one of Donegal’s most famous hotels. Set in a restored 17th-century castle overlooking Lough Eske, it offers serene views, forest trails, and a peaceful atmosphere.

A short drive from Donegal Town, this hotel feels like a remote getaway, but it’s all part of the charm.

Speaking of charming, the rooms are big and comfortable, with touches like four-poster beds, deep tubs, or fireplaces. Suites offer even more room to unwind, so it’s ideal for those who want an extra-special stay.

The spa and indoor pool are top-tier here, and the outdoor jacuzzi is an experience you won’t forget (especially on a crisp Donegal morning). If you’re feeling extra whimsical, take the gentle horse-and-cart ride around the grounds.

Food-wise, you’re in good hands. Breakfast is fresh and hearty, dinner at the grill restaurant is a treat, and grabbing a drink by the fire is practically a requirement. And if you’re a whiskey lover, the bar is absolutely worth a stop!

Pro Tip:

If you’re eyeing a stay in the extended wing, expect a longer walk to your room. Choose your room wisely.

Harvey’s Point is one of the best places to stay in Donegal. It’s almost storybook-like, sitting right beside Lough Eske with the Bluestack Mountains rising behind it, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants to slow down and take a break.

Yes, it’s about 8 KM from Donegal Town, but the drive is quick and totally worth it. Once we arrived, we saw walking paths, forest trails, and even a cozy reading room with an open fire—basically all the ingredients for a very relaxing day.

The rooms are spacious, warm, and welcoming, with soft beds, high ceilings, and thoughtful touches, such as fruit, cookies, and milk waiting inside. There’s also free Wi-Fi, and some suites even have whirlpool tubs or outdoor seating!

Dining is a definite highlight, especially with the spectacular lake views. Meanwhile, the grounds feel very calm, with simple walking paths circling the lake. And even when there’s a wedding, the place stays peaceful and quiet.

Pro Tip:

Make sure to bring good walking shoes if you plan to walk the trails around the hotel. A good pair of shoes will make it much easier to explore.

The Abbey Hotel is right in the centre of everything—literally on the main square! You’ll be able to wander to the castle, grab coffee, browse little shops, or head toward Donegal Bay without ever needing Google Maps.

It also works well as a base for trips along the Wild Atlantic Way, Slieve League, and nearby beaches. Adding to the convenience, parking is easy, with nearby lots with affordable rates!

As for the hotel itself, its stone walls give it an old-world feel. Inside, the rooms have all the essentials covered: free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and tea and coffee makers. For a fancier stay, select rooms and suites offer bay views, whirlpool baths, and four-poster beds.

When hunger strikes, the Market House Restaurant serves fresh local dishes, and the Abbey Bar is a great spot to unwind in the evening, especially when there’s live music.

Guests can also visit the sister hotel to use the indoor pool and spa, which is a lovely bonus.

Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa is one of those places that feels welcoming—partly because it’s family-run, and partly because the building looks like a mini castle on a quiet Donegal road.

Since it’s 1.7 km from Pollan Beach, it’s perfect if you’re heading to Malin Head and Doagh Famine Village. It’s also a great base for exploring the Inishowen Peninsula. Local shops, cafés, and attractions are also just a short drive away.

The rooms are large, comfortable, nicely decorated, and each comes with an en-suite bathroom, satellite TV, and tea and coffee facilities. Family rooms here can fit four people, providing ample space for couples’ weekends and family adventures.

There’s free Wi-Fi in the public areas, plus on-site parking, a spa, and a fitness center.

As for breakfast, expect a full Irish (because of course it is), and it’s included. There’s a formal restaurant on-site, plus a casual bar for lighter meals or a relaxed drink. It’s the kind of setup where you can dress up… or just show up hungry. Either way, you’re sorted.

Pro Tip:

If you’re driving an electric car, plan charging stops ahead of time. Charging points near the hotel are limited. Check your route and choose charging stations before you travel so you don’t run low on power.

Mill Park Hotel is one of those places that makes everything effortless. It sits right outside Donegal Town, with quiet gardens on one side and shops, cafés, and Donegal Castle just a short walk away.

Slieve League, Glengesh Pass, and nearby beaches are all within easy reach—perfect if you want beautiful views without spending half your holiday in the car.

Going inside the hotel, you’ll be welcomed by a bright and cheerful lobby. Meanwhile, the rooms have the same welcoming vibe: clean, spacious, and comfy—exactly what you want after a day of exploring

The best part here is the breakfast buffet, which is big and satisfying. The bar and terrace are go-to spots for unwinding and people-watching, and the leisure facilities were a nice bonus.

After wandering around town or tackling a scenic hike, slipping into the pool, hot tub, or steam room is just the reward you’ll feel like you definitely earned (even if all you did was stroll around Donegal with an ice cream).

Pro Tip:

Avoid ground-floor rooms with patio doors if you’re sensitive to noise. These rooms are convenient, but can get more outside chatter. Upper floors are usually quieter.

The charm continues in its rooms, which are clean, bright, and comfy. Some even have chandeliers, which elevates the vibe. The beds are big, the floors are hardwood, and the bathrooms look fresh and modern. It’s simple, but in the best way!

Breakfast here is a real treat: served in a cosy old house from the 1800s, and you can smell the good food before you even sit down.

Go for the Full Irish, the avocado toast, or the lemon curd pancakes. Honestly, you can’t go wrong. Even locals come in for breakfast, which tells you everything you need to know.

If you want a quiet break in the countryside while exploring Donegal, Mulroy Woods Hotel is a great place to stay. From the moment you walk in, you get that warm Donegal welcome that makes you feel at home.

The hotel has a cosy, country feel, but it still looks modern and fresh. Think soft lights, stone walls, and fireplaces that make you want to sit down with a cup of tea.

All 45 rooms have been updated, so everything feels bright and clean. Even the bathrooms are so spotless, you can practically check your reflection in the tiles.

The on-site restaurant, Harper’s, serves delicious breakfasts and hearty dinners made with local ingredients.

If you want something more relaxed, go to the lounge bar, where you can have some lovely tea and scones. For a pint and some live music, the Wee Bar’s the place to be!

The best part? You’re right beside some of the most beautiful spots on the Wild Atlantic Way. Mulroy Bay, Sheephaven Bay, Portsalon’s beaches, and Glenveagh National Park are all close by.

Turn off the radiators and crack open a window for 10–15 minutes when you arrive. Rooms can run warm, especially in cooler months, and this quick reset helps the space cool down so you don’t end up sleeping in a stuffy room.
