What is the Cave Hill Country Park known for?

Covering approximately 300 hectares, Cave Hill Country Park in Belfast features rich landscapes, including upland heath, woodlands, and species-rich grasslands. The park is named after five caves that served as early iron mines along its cliffs.
This park has a historical spot called McArt’s Fort. It’s an ancient ráth that dates back to prehistoric times. The fort sits about 368 meters (1,200 feet) up high. The park also contains other archaeological remnants, such as stone cairns, ringforts, and crannogs.
The park is also home to Belfast Castle. The castle grounds have amazing gardens and cool amenities like cafes and picnic areas.
The park has some awesome hiking trails for those who are into hiking. The Cavehill Trail is 4.5 miles long and takes you through all terrain with breathtaking views. The park also allows birdwatchers to spot skylarks, kestrels, and buzzards flying around.
Some parts of the park are even designated as local nature reserves, showing how important it is for conservation efforts in the region. No wonder Cave Hill has been getting Green Flag Awards since 2009—it’s all about preserving those natural habitats.
Best Time to Go to Cave Hill Country Park

The best times to visit Cave Hill Country Park are spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October). The weather is generally mild during these months, making it perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking and picnicking.
Cave Hill Country Park is open daily at 7:30 AM. The closing times vary throughout the year, influenced by daylight hours. Consider arriving early to enjoy cooler temperatures and quieter trails to make the most of your visit.
How to Get to Cave Hill Country Park

1. Metro Bus
You can take the Metro bus to Cave Hill Country Park. You can hop on the number 1 bus from Upper Queen Street, which will take you directly to Antrim Road.
Depending on where you get off, you can easily access either Belfast Castle or the Zoo entrance. Watch the bus schedule, especially if you visit on Sundays when the service is less frequent.
2. Cycling
If you’re starting from the city center, the best way to go is to head north towards Antrim Road. Once you’re on your way, you can stick to the cycle lanes along the River Lagan, which will guide you right to the park.
When you hit the Antrim Road, keep an eye out for signs pointing you to Belfast Castle – that’s your ticket into the park. The distance from the city center is around 3 miles, and if you pedal at a decent pace, it should take you about 15-20 minutes.
3. Driving Your Car
If you’re coming from the city center, you can start by heading north on the A1 (Ormeau Road) until you hit the junction with the A55 (Belfast Ring Road). Take the A55 exit towards Antrim Road and follow the signs for Cave Hill.
You’ll end up on the Antrim Road (A6) and from there, you can access the park through different entrances like the Innisfayle Park entrance at BT15 5GR or the Carrs Glen entrance at Ballysillan Road, BT14 8LA. The drive usually takes about 15-20 minutes.

McArt’s Fort is an ancient fort dating back to around 2700 years. It is perched on a cliff overlooking Belfast. The path winds through lush greenery and rocky terrain, passing fascinating archaeological features.
When we finally reached the fort, the view was breathtaking! On a clear day, we could see across Belfast Lough and even as far as the Mourne Mountains. Standing atop this ancient structure, we were awed by the sight of Belfast sprawling below us.
The fort itself is roughly circular, making it ideal for photos. We sat on the stones, soaking in the beauty and imagining the fort’s role in local history.
2. Visit Belfast Castle

Belfast Castle has an incredible Victorian architecture from the 1860s. It’s nestled at the foot of Cave Hill, and let me tell you, it’s one of the best things to do in Belfast . The gardens surrounding the castle are just perfect for a relaxed stroll.
But that’s not all – inside the castle, there’s the Cave Hill Visitor Centre in the cellar, where you can soak up so much history about the area. I love grabbing a bite at the Tavern Coffee Shop or enjoying a meal at the Cellar Restaurant.
What got me, though, were the breathtaking views from different spots around the castle grounds. Standing on the terrace, you can see the whole of Belfast spread out below, with the shimmering lough in the distance.
3. Explore the Ecotrails and Orienteering Routes

The Cavehill Trai is about 4.5 miles long and passes through diverse landscapes—moorland, heath, and lush woodlands. The interpretative panels along the routes offer insight into the park’s history and ecology.
And here’s the cool part – if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try orienteering! They’ve got maps available at the trailheads, so you can challenge yourself to navigate the park using just your sense of direction and a bit of strategy.

I also tried hiking up to Napoleon’s Nose. The views were stunning, and the hike was a good mix of challenging terrain and lush greenery. And who could forget catching glimpses of the iconic Belfast Castle below as we navigated the paths?
