Killarney House, built in the 18th century by the Earls of Kenmare, has a rich history. It welcomed many notable guests, such as Queen Victoria and her entourage during her 1861 visit to Ireland.

In 1957, the estate was sold to an American syndicate and later acquired by John McShain in 1959. After Mary McShain’s death in 1998, it became state-owned.

Years have passed, and Killarney House and Gardens deteriorated. They closed to the public in 2014 for extensive reconstruction but reopened in 2016 and regained popularity with locals and visitors.

Today, the National Parks & Wildlife Services have been restoring the gardens based on original plans. Plans for Killarney House include a visitor center, room restoration, and historical exhibits.
